In addition to the services available, over the years Michael and his team have or helped to develop innovative techniques, which we now count as everyday tools in series animation. Some of them include:
  • Procedural Animation - As one of the original team members to help develop Houdini, the 3D CGI animation software application from Side Effects Software.
  • 3D Toon Shading - While working with Katsuhiro Otomo (Beyond-C/Akira) for Side Effects Software, Andrew and Michael helped lay the groundwork for the real-time 3D Toon Shading used in the Japanamated film, Steamboy through Houdini.
  • 2.5D Cut-Out Animation - A pre-flash technique in Houdini to mimic cut-out animation within the 3D environment. Refined later for animated series such as Angela Anaconda.
  • Motion Layering and Blending - As Director of Development, Michael was a member of a team lead by Athomas Goldberg and Ken Perlin who created Orchestrate3D, the first procedural motion layering and blending sofware application for character animation.
  • CGI/Live Action Hybrid for Broadcast Television - The first to design a hybrid 3D CGI and Live Action pipeline for broadcast television on the AAC/BBC series Ace Lightning, which would then carry over to the BBC Scotland series ShoeBox Zoo.
  • Toon Boom as a Series Animation Tool - Creation of the first Toon Boom pipeline for series animation on the Curious Pictures/VH1 Hey Joel.
